Self-care it's not a luxury, but a necessity.
What is self-care? We look at it as simple acts that you can do on a daily basis to brighten your life. So many people—women especially—move through the motions, doing one thing after another, but what about being? What about existing in the present moment and feeling grateful for all that you have? What about creating a positive space for yourself, adopting a positive mindset, and doing good for those around you at the same time?
That’s what self-care is to us.
Our founder’s journey
Our founder, Hanan through her own journey taking care of herself discovered a passion to help other powerful women learn to love themselves too. It could be a gratitude practice. A dedication to go after your dreams. Or a simple indulgence, splurging on something you might not normally do.
“There are moments in life when you stand still and don’t know what to do next. I was there too. What I learned in my younger years is this: To continue to refine myself because you can’t grow without reflection. And to ask: What makes me happy? Or what would make me happy? We’re always looking for something big, but sometimes it’s the little things.”
- Hanan, Zany & Shy’s founder
Self care ideas to indulge
Self care can be whatever makes you feel good in a personal level.
It’s up to you to find a quiet space for soul searching and identify the moments that make you feel your best. What practices or rituals can you add to your day to day that help you feel empowered and ready to take on the world like the powerful woman you are?
1. Eat well and move your body.
Food is fuel and exercise is a way to love yourself, not just something that you have to do. Life is best lived when we eat well and move our bodies. Healthy food gives us energy to run and jump and play with our loved ones for years to come, and the more we move the better we feel. We choose fresh over processed, home cooked with love over fast food, more plant-based and less meat. We also feel our best when we make time to move.
Some ideas to fuel up and move:
- Go for a walk around your local farmer’s market just because.
- Get some fresh air outside of the city if you’re used to urban life.
- Dedicate time to exercise, whether it’s a quick yoga class or trying a new sport, something that will make you feel good inside and outside.
- If you’re busy, take the time to prep healthy meals for the next few days.
- Remember to drink enough water every day.
None of these activities are particularly uncommon, but simple acts showing yourself that your health is important. You are important.
2. Block a few minutes of quiet time into your day.
Life is busy. We all have laundry lists of responsibilities and never feel like there’s enough time in the day to cross all the tasks off our lists, but what’s the point of living well if you don’t take the time to soak it in?
We encourage you to look at quiet time as a way to take care of your mind. Rather than a luxury that few have, it could be a necessity—just as important as daily movement. Read, write, meditate—what you do matters less than the fact that you choose to prioritize your personal wellbeing beyond the noise of the world.
Some ideas for how to spend your quiet time:
Pull affirmation cards.
Soak in a bubble bath.
Read a book on your wish list.
Try meditation with the help of an app!
Enjoy your morning coffee instead of rushing to get ready.
3. Get yourself a gift… just because.
One of our favorite ideas: Buy yourself gifts of luxury for no other reason than to spoil yourself! Who says that we need to wait for a certain occasion to have the things we want? A woman who recognizes their power also sees the value in splurging on pretty things… We definitely do!
Hint hint: Browse our collection of sustainable and ethically sourced, luxury jewelry. A Zany & Shy piece to add to your jewelry box is a great way to treat yourself—and you deserve it.
4. Set goals and go after them.
There’s nothing more exciting than knowing what you want and choosing to go after it. Powerful women take the time to listen to their inner selves—including those big scary goals and deepest fears. Learn to let go of limiting beliefs and create an action plan to ask for what they want in life.
Whatever it is, a true act of self-care is identifying and going after the thing because you only have this one life to live right now. Why wait?
Your self-care task:
Sit down and think about where you want to be in 5 years.
Write out something you can do today to get there.
5. Travel to a destination that means something to you.
There’s something so exhilarating about travelling to new places. Indulging in the culture, soaking up all there is to do and see and learn in a far away destination. For your next trip, rather than going with what makes the most sense or the most affordable option, why not choose a destination that means something to you?
Maybe you read about a specific place in a book or saw images on social media and knew you had to get there one day. Or maybe it’s a matter of travelling back to the beginning of your story—like visiting the place where your ancestors lived with an appreciation for all they did to lead to you and an awareness of the strings of time. How cool would that be?!
In general, remember that taking care of yourself is no one’s but your own. Self-care it’s a way of living, prioritizing yourself, because we can’t fill the cups of others if we feel depleted. As women, wives, mothers, sisters, aunts, and friends, we show up as our best selves when we take the time and space to care for ourselves.
Don’t feel totally comfortable indulging yet? Here’s a handful of affirmations to repeat to yourself…
My self care practice is no one’s business but my own.
My self care practice allows me to show up as my best self for others.
My self care practice is crucial to my personal wellbeing and growth.
My self care practice doesn’t need to include monetary purchases, but it can.
My self care practice is unique and doesn’t need to mirror anyone else’s.
We hope that you choose something from this list, if not all, and incorporate self-care into your day.
